A Chance Operation At The Radio Station I

These Chance Operations are in celebration of the centenial of John Cage‘s birthday (September 5, 1912) . For this piece of esoteric radio mixology I have compiled 64 recordings of various John Cage compositions, talks and lectures and assigned to each, one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. At the station I will then use an I Ching app to determine which recordings to play, overlapping and mixing them together as I see fit in the moment. For those recordings where there are multiple tracks a random number generator will determine which track is to be played.

In working on this piece of radio art I compiled a list of the 64 Hexagrams with the recordings I assigned to each of them. I am making the chart available as PDF. Below you will find a list of the Hexagrams that were divined in the course of this first episode of the Chance Operation and the corresponding recording. Many of these recordings came from Ubu.com, a resource I can’t recommend enough. The rest came from my own collection and that of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
